FDA regulation requires barcodes on pharmaceutical packages

The FDA has approved a new regulation requiring pharmaceutical producers to include a bar code on all immediate-release medicine packages. Initially, nurses scanned the barcodes to ensure that patients were receiving the proper drugs. Barcodes might be used by robotic systems for stock, pick, and verification operations. Fresenius Kabi is the first pharmaceutical business to include data matrix barcodes (2D) on all of its products. The objective is to improve drug safety and patient care by streamlining procedures throughout the institution. “I hope the rest of the drug industry will follow,” Marvin Neuenschwander remarked.
