Pharmacy cyberattacks: Lessons for practitioners

A recent run of high-profile cyberattacks has highlighted the need for healthcare organisations to invest in continuing security initiatives. Pharmacies hold both medical and financial information, making them prime targets for fraudsters. According to research by the cybersecurity firm Critical Insight, healthcare industry attacks in the United States affected a record-breaking 45 million individuals in 2021. To preserve the sensitive personal health and private information that pharmacists retain and use, pharmacies must educate themselves on their duties and evaluate technology partners. Mobile applications are one possible point of failure, and presenters at the NASP 2022 Annual Conference & Expo shared advice on how to avoid these blunders. Many small pharmacies make the error of using free Gmail addresses to send important data that is not encrypted or safe. According to Lee Kim, senior principal of cybersecurity and privacy at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, it is critical to guarantee that data is disposed of properly and securely. Bryan Antepara, an eCare team lead at eMazzanti Technologies, an IT consultancy service in Hoboken, N.J., stressed the need for having a cybersecurity plan with various levels so that if there is an incursion or an attack, the entire system is not brought down.
