Boys may suffer more: Impact of losing parent prematurely on mental health and finances

A large long-term study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health suggests that the health and economic consequences of losing a parent prematurely may be more significant for boys than girls. The research, based on nationwide registry data from Finland, analysed the impact of parental death before the age of 21 on mental health and labour market outcomes between ages 26 and 30. The study included nearly one million Finns born between 1971 and 1986. Results revealed that experiencing the death of a parent before age 21 was strongly linked to poor mental health and lower earnings or unemployment in adulthood for both sexes. However, men appeared to be more vulnerable, with higher odds of hospital admission for mental health issues and lower employment rates compared to women, who experienced a similar loss.
