Consumer survey reveals strong support for disclosure of medicine carbon footprint

A recent survey conducted by sustainable medicines non-profit YewMaker has shown substantial consumer support for pharmaceutical manufacturers to disclose the carbon footprint of their medicines. The poll involved over 1,300 participants from the US, UK, France, and Australia. It found that 84% of respondents favored the disclosure of a medicine’s carbon footprint. Additionally, 84% supported the selection of drugs with a lower footprint if costs were comparable. Moreover, 73% believed it was crucial for doctors to have access to carbon footprint information when prescribing medicines. The healthcare sector is responsible for approximately 4.4% of global emissions, with medicines accounting for a significant portion. The findings emphasise the growing importance of addressing environmental impact within the healthcare industry.
