CZ Biohub NY: Pioneering early disease detection with immune cells

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) is launching the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub New York (CZ Biohub NY) in New York City, collaborating with Columbia University, The Rockefeller University, and Yale University. This initiative aims to engineer immune cells to create “cellular endoscopes” that can detect early signs of diseases within cells, monitor changes, and intervene before they become untreatable. It’s the fourth research institute in the CZI Biohub Network, which focuses on advancing our understanding of human biology. The goal is to harness the immune system’s capabilities to detect and treat diseases before symptoms appear, potentially transforming healthcare. This approach leverages single-cell biology, experimental technologies, machine learning, and AI. The CZ Biohub NY will initially concentrate on challenging-to-detect cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, ageing, and autoimmunity. The long-term mission is to decode the mysteries of the cell and find cures, preventions, or management solutions for all diseases by the end of the century.
