Northumbria University biomedical researchers awarded £1 Million for disease research

Northumbria University researchers, Professor Emile R. Chimusa and Professor Simon Johnson, have been awarded a total of £1 million by the Academy of Medical Sciences to conduct research on diseases such as prostate cancer and mitochondrial disease. The grant is part of the academy’s effort to attract and retain talent globally to fill professorships in the UK. Professor Chimusa will be using AI to study genomic data and understand how different societal groups are susceptible to diseases, while Professor Johnson specialises in the pathology and physiology of genetic mitochondrial diseases, focusing on Leigh syndrome. Both professors are planning to translate their research into medical advancements for the benefit of patients and society.
