Study finds link between high blood pressure and mental health outcomes

Researchers have studied the effects of high blood pressure on depressive symptoms and well-being in a cohort of over 500,000 individuals using medical data from the UK Biobank database. The study found that higher systolic blood pressure is linked to fewer depressive symptoms and higher well-being, but a hypertension diagnosis and an impending diagnosis are linked to the inverse. Hypertension and depression often co-occur, and both are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Some studies suggest that hypertension may cause depressive symptoms in ageing through microvascular brain damage, while other studies show that high blood pressure is linked to better mood, higher well-being, and lower distress. The findings of this study could improve the management of hypertension and depressive symptoms.
