Study reveals limited benefits of early metformin in gestational diabetes treatment

In a recent study published in JAMA Network, researchers conducted a randomised clinical trial to explore the potential benefits of early metformin therapy in pregnant women with gestational diabetes. Contrary to previous beliefs, the study did not find improvements in diabetes symptoms with metformin. The research aimed to investigate if early metformin therapy could reduce insulin dependence and enhance glycemic control in such women. While the primary outcomes did not show significant differences in glucose levels or insulin requirements between the metformin and placebo groups, a secondary analysis revealed a reduced probability of insulin initiation in the metformin group. Additionally, participants in the metformin group exhibited less weight gain during pregnancy. The study’s findings provide valuable insights for future research and management approaches for gestational diabetes.
