UK Government allocates £13M for AI healthcare research and announces global AI summit

The UK government has announced a £13 million investment to advance artificial intelligence (AI) research in healthcare. This initiative, introduced by Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan, coincides with the selection of two prominent experts responsible for preparing the first major global summit on responsible AI use. The funding will support 22 projects across UK universities and NHS trusts, covering diverse areas like semi-autonomous surgical robotics and predictive health analysis. University College London’s Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences is a key recipient, obtaining over £500,000 for a real-time AI decision support framework to enhance surgical outcomes and reduce recovery times. Both Technology Secretary Donelan and Health Secretary Steve Barclay endorse the potential of AI to revolutionise healthcare by enabling earlier diagnosis, more effective treatments, and faster recovery. The funding is part of the UKRI Technology Missions Fund, contributing to the UK’s leadership in healthcare research. The country is also set to host a significant AI summit, uniting global leaders, tech firms, and experts to discuss AI’s responsible deployment.
