UK’s MHRA launches ‘AI Airlock’ regulatory sandbox for healthcare AI testing

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has introduced the “AI Airlock,” a regulatory sandbox designed for testing artificial intelligence products in a controlled environment. This tool provides developers with a secure space to test and showcase AI healthcare tools before their real-world implementation. The AI Airlock aims to assist medical device manufacturers in ensuring the practical viability of their products while fostering collaboration among different developers. Paul Campbell, MHRA’s head of software and AI, emphasised the need for safe and properly regulated AI in healthcare to drive innovation and improve patient care. This development follows UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s commitment to addressing AI’s potential uses, with funding allocated to roll out AI tools across the National Health System (NHS).
