AI system RETFound: Revolutionising eye health and predicting general health

Researchers at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology have unveiled RETFound, an AI system trained on millions of eye scans from the NHS.

It identifies sight-threatening eye conditions and predicts broader health issues like heart attacks, strokes, and Parkinson’s disease. RETFound is open-source and outperforms existing AI systems, especially in diverse populations and rare diseases. This groundbreaking project combines NHS clinical data with university computer science expertise, positioning the UK as an AI healthcare leader. The model significantly improves label efficiency, reducing the need for human labels. RETFound enhances the diagnosis of eye diseases and aids in predicting systemic illnesses, offering valuable insights into overall health through oculomics. It’s freely available for global research into eye diseases.
