American Heart Association Advisory: Pioneering research blueprint for ‘Food as Medicine’ initiatives

The American Heart Association (AHA) Presidential Advisory, led by experts from Weill Cornell Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, outlines a comprehensive strategy to expand rigorous research on Food as Medicine (FIM) initiatives for managing chronic diseases. Published in Circulation, the plan addresses the growing popularity of FIM interventions but highlights the scarcity of robust data to guide implementation. It emphasises the urgency of healthier diets in combating chronic illnesses, especially in underserved communities lacking access to nutritious foods. The advisory underscores the potential of FIM programmes, aiming to bridge health equity gaps while advocating for sustainable food systems. Proposing a roadmap for research, it aims to launch large-scale FIM trials by 2027 and promote successful approaches by 2032, driving transformative changes in healthcare, cost reduction, and equitable health outcomes for millions.
