American Heart Association advocates rigorous research for ‘Food is Medicine’ initiatives

An American Heart Association (AHA) Presidential Advisory outlines a comprehensive plan to enhance rigorous research on initiatives providing food as medicine for chronic conditions. The Food is Medicine (FIM) approach aims to treat or prevent chronic conditions by facilitating access to healthier food through strategies like produce prescriptions, food subsidies, and prepared meals. While FIM is gaining traction, the data to guide implementation is limited. The advisory advocates for bolstering the evidence base and ensuring equitable, widespread implementation of FIM initiatives. Poor diets contribute significantly to chronic diseases and health inequity. The advisory calls for developing infrastructure for large FIM trials, starting definitive clinical trials by 2027, and disseminating successful approaches by 2032, highlighting policy hurdles and the need for education.
