FDA approves health claim: Yogurt consumption linked to reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes

Danone North America’s petition to the FDA has led to a new qualified health claim for yoghurt, recognising its potential to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. The approved claim suggests that regular consumption of at least 2 cups (three servings) per week may have this benefit, based on limited scientific evidence. This decision follows nearly five years of FDA review of research on yoghurt and Type 2 diabetes. With more than 300,000 people studied, Danone emphasises yoghurt’s potential health benefits. Miguel Freitas, Danone’s VP of Health and Scientific Affairs, highlights the rising concern of Type 2 diabetes in the US and hopes this claim will empower consumers to make dietary modifications. The claim also supports Danone’s mission to promote health through food, aligning with their investment in improving access to nutritious foods. The International Dairy Foods Association applauds the FDA’s decision, emphasising yoghurt’s role in promoting public health.
