Healthcare embraces food as medicine: Highmark Health leads initiatives to address nutrition and health

The healthcare industry is recognising the significant impact of nutrition on overall health, leading to various initiatives that integrate food as medicine. Highmark Health, among others, has launched medically tailored meal programmes and community-specific food initiatives across 14 priority communities in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and West Virginia. By partnering with stakeholders and gaining community input, Highmark Health aims to address acute food insecurity needs and provide nutrition education. In one example, the Healthy Neighbourhood Pilot in West Virginia collaborates with Dollar General to offer eligible residents debit cards for purchasing nutritious foods. Highmark Health’s comprehensive strategy focuses on connecting food as medicine with the healthcare system to drive business transformation and improve health outcomes.
