Wellcome provides $1.8 million in funding for regulation of digital mental health tools

As the healthcare industry welcomes the entrance of newer digital mental health tools rapidly, the safety concerns becomes a growing concern. Wellcome, the healthcare charity, has pledged £1.8 million to the UK health technology assessment (HTA) organisation NICE for the purpose of creating guidelines on effective regulation of digital products pertaining to mental health. The NHS has already begun using digital mental health solutions, but most have been done so hastily and with little planning. One of the few exceptions to this is the insomnia-focused app Sleepio. The funds from Wellcome will be used to create guidelines that specify what counts as a medical device, its risk classification, and the review of studies that these devices are based on.
