Study suggests vitamin D supplements may reduce major cardiovascular events

A clinical trial conducted by Australian researchers and published in The BMJ examined the impact of vitamin D supplements on reducing major heart disease events. The study focused on a group of older adults, aged 60 to 84, who are at higher risk for developing heart disease. Participants were divided into a test group receiving monthly vitamin D supplements and a control group receiving a placebo. The findings revealed a 9% lower rate of major cardiovascular events in the group that took the vitamin D supplement. Although no impact on strokes was observed, incidents of heart attacks were 19% lower in the vitamin D group. The researchers recommend further testing to determine the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in reducing cardiovascular disease.
